No track car? No problem. This guide breaks down track car hire and coaching, what’s included, and why it’s not just for beginners.

A simple guide for your next track day

If you want to get more out of a track day, two upgrades make a huge difference: driver coaching and track car hire.

Coaching gives your sessions structure and helps you improve faster. Hiring a track-prepared car removes the stress of prep, wear and tear, and that “will my road car survive this?” worry. You can do either, or combine both for a properly supported experience.

A lot of people assume coaching is only for beginners, or that track car hire is only for special occasions. In reality, both are practical tools that can make track days more enjoyable, safer, and less intimidating.

What is track coaching?

Track coaching (driver coaching) is 1-to-1 instruction that helps you become smoother, safer, and more consistent. Speed often follows naturally, but the real benefit is confidence and control, especially when the pace increases or conditions change.

Coaching is useful at every level:

  • If you’re new, it helps you build strong foundations and avoid bad habits.

  • If you’ve done a few days, it helps you stop guessing and start improving deliberately.

  • If you’re already quick, it helps you find consistency, refine technique, and work on the details that add up across a lap.

Good coaching focuses on the things that actually move the needle, like vision, braking, car balance, and how you deal with traffic. You’ll often come away feeling calmer and more in control, even if lap time isn’t the main goal.

When choosing coaching, the quality of the instructor matters. For example, L2R say their coaching team holds a minimum of a Grade B ARDS instructor licence and has substantial track experience, so you’re learning from people who do this properly and can adapt the coaching to your pace and goals.

Good coaching builds skills that translate from road to track, including:

  • Vision and planning

  • Braking technique and consistency

  • Racing line and dealing with traffic

  • Balance and weight transfer

  • Understeer/oversteer control

Coaching can be done in your own car, and many instructors can also support you at any track day, including those who already own their own cars.

What is track car hire?

Track car hire is an “arrive and drive” option where you use a track-prepared car, with support built in. It’s a great way to get started if you don’t yet have a suitable car for the job, but it also works brilliantly if you just want a straightforward day without worrying about tyres, brakes, noise limits, or whether your daily driver is going to have a hard life.

Many hire packages include an instructor as part of the day, which is ideal if you want someone in the passenger seat helping you build confidence session by session. It can turn a track day from “laps and vibes” into something that feels purposeful and progressive.

It’s ideal if you:

  • Don’t want to risk your road car

  • Don’t have a track car

  • Want a hassle-free first track day

  • Prefer driving over logistics

A typical hire package may include:

  • Delivery to the circuit

  • Full day with an instructor

  • On-site mechanic support

  • HD onboard video

  • Insurance (with excess)

  • Fuel and consumables

  • Tea, coffee, snacks where possible

Always check exactly what’s included and what the insurance excess is.

Coaching in your car vs a hire car

Your car is best if you want to improve in the car you actually drive, understand its behaviour, and build confidence in something familiar. It’s also ideal if your goal is to become more comfortable pushing your own car safely and consistently.

Hire car is best if you want a fully track-focused setup with minimal hassle, or you want to avoid wear and tear on your own car.

Hire can also be a nice “bridge” for beginners: learn the basics with an instructor in a prepared car, then later decide whether you want to take your own car on track, build something dedicated, or keep hiring.

Common questions

“Is coaching worth it if I’m not trying to be fast?”

Yes. Most people gain confidence, consistency, and safety first. Speed is usually the result.

“Do I need a track car to enjoy track days?”

Not at all. But hiring a track-prepared car can remove a lot of friction, especially for your first day.

“Will I be taught racing lines?”

Often yes, but good coaching goes beyond lines. Braking, vision, balance, and car control usually make a bigger difference.

“Can a group of us hire a car?”

Usually, yes, but it depends on the provider and the structure of the day. Some companies can cater for multiple drivers, but it’s often aimed at one or two friends attending together, rather than a big “experience day” setup with lots of short turns. If you’re booking as a group, ask how driver swaps work, what’s included per driver, and whether extra coaching time is available.
